my icon looks too sad

Awkward library find of the day: note that says "Dear Amy, don't get so mad at me when I try to help you. I ordered you these skin supplements as well so hope they help as I know the next period is going to be stressful for you, big hugs and kisses, Mom." Not that awkward, but I always feel weirdly voyeuristic when I read notes left in library books. Also, "Mom", if "Amy" is getting mad at you for helping, I don't think telling her she has bad skin is going to help, lol.

Saw Harry Potter last night with Trevor. That movie was filled with so much awkwardness, but I loved it. Yeah, they left stuff out and there was stuff I didn't like (how they handled the Half Blood prince thing, romance resolution, the way the Death Eaters left Hogwarts), but I really enjoyed it overall and felt like they did a good job of balancing the light romantic silliness with the heaviness of what was "really" going on. But I still don't ship Harry/Ginny, sorry. Harry/Luna, ftw. Also kind of Snape/Draco? Which was weird for me because I totally didn't see it in the books, but in the movie...mmmm. And Draco cried in the bathrooms like an emo kid, which I was waiting for through the whole movie. :D

Next up is Comic Con which I am getting more and more excited for. There aren't a ton of panels I want to go to, but there are enough and it will be so awesome to have people I know there!

Oh, and does anyone have any good book recommendations for me? I like books about female characters, that aren't too sad or written before 1900. Other than that, I'm open.

Harry Potter! ♥

I think HBP might be my favorite movie so far. There were certainly changes they made that I didn't like, but overall I thought it was really good. I didn't get bored at all, which surprised me, considering it was like two and a half hours long. I don't usually have that kind of patience for movies. >_>

HBP was definitely my favorite movie so far. They get better and better with each film, I think. I was surprised I didn't get bored, too. I remember thinking "wow, this is kind of long" but not in a bored way, just in a surprised way.

It makes me happy that you like both HP and Twilight. I'm not an HP fan (don't get me wrong, I thought the first book was interesting and well-written...but I just can't relate)...Anyway, my friend is HP obsessed (mainly Rupert obsessed) and she hates Twilight. Everything about it.

It makes me sad. :(

What panels are you looking forward to at CC?

There seems to be this battle between HP and Twilight that I really don't understand. People are always comparing them, and I don't really understand why. Aside fromt he fact that they're young adult, they don't have a ton in common. Have you read more than the first book? They get a lot better as time goes on, the first 2 are basically children's books.

I'm looking forward to the Twilight panel, of course. :D Also, if Joel doesn't object and they don't conflict with anything, I'd like to go to the True Blood and/or Vampire Diaries panels. It's a vampirelicious year this year. Also Doctor Who, Dollhouse, maybe Heroes, Robot Chicken, Dr. Horrible Sing-along...there were more, but that's what I'm remembering off the top of my head.

I didn't even finish reading the 1st book! haha. Our 'gifted & talented' teacher would read it to us. The books were all the rage when i was 12 so they were ALWAYS checked out. I think they were checked out for years. All the "smart" people wanted to read them.
I'm sure they're interesting....I just don't have much interest in wizards. (Not that i have much of an interest in vampires either....but you know.) hehe.

The main reason my friend hates Twilight is because it's compared to HP. I guess she's snobby in the way that she thinks it's like comparing dog food to steak or something. I just think,"Who cares?! No one made you go watch Twilight at midnight when it premiered!" She had shown no interest in it at all and yet there she was. Crazy girl.
My sister hates it as well (but she hates HP too, except that she says it's for nerds.) She says Twilight is "gay." It's not my fault she gave into the hype and watched it (expecting what? A horror movie?).
People like to group the supernatural together i guess...

I hope you can get into the New Moon panel! That would be amazing. I'm kind of excited about the Vampire Diaries as well. haha. Damn the CW and its catchy shows....

What is Dollhouse and Dr.Horrible?

I've never been especially interested in wizards, either, but trust me, they're worth the read. Although I can understand not wanting to start them up now, especially since they were shoved at so many of us as children, lol.

I've noticed that a lot of people who "hate Twilight" still seem to see the movie, or read the books...multiple times...which has never made sense to me. And I hate that all supernatural is lumped together! People always say that the Twilight vampires are lame and all I can ever think is, dude, they're aren't horro vampires, they're romance vampires. They might as well be different species.

I really hope I get into the New Moon panel, too! Last year I thought for sure I wouldn't make it into the Twilight panel because we went to a panel that ended an hour before it started, and people had been lined up the previous night! But we made it, had to sit in the back, but we made it. I'm pretty confident this year. I'm mostly excited about the Vampire Diaries because I love the author who wrote the original series. I haven't actually read it, but I read another series she did called Night World and it's my favorite vampire romance novel series ever. You should check it out!

Dollhouse and Dr. Horrible are both Joss Whedon creations. Dollhouse is a tv show that's been airing on FOX, and will be airing again next season. It's kind of hard to explain the concept, but it's a really cool show. Dr. Horrible is an internet based short film that Joss did last summer. It's a musical and it's awesome.

i have a book recommendation for you!
its called Outlander. and its amazing. its basically historical romance. its about an English women from 1945 who while on vacation in the Scottish Highlands falls through a circle of standing stones and into the 1740s. romance, adventure, history (a splash of sex) and awesomeness ensues.
its the beginning of a 6 book series but it stands extremely well on its own
i dont know anyone else our age that has read it but plenty of older women haha and they love it too

YES. I thought that Harry and Luna were going to get together when the books were being released... alas. Ginny got the boy.

I can't wait to see the movie...! :D

[identity profile] emilie-rainbow.livejournal.com 2009-07-16 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't mind Ginny and Harry together...it just always weirded me out that he always talked about her like a little sister before and then BAM making out. And Luna was much more interesting, to me anyway.

And the movie is excellent! Does it release at the same time over there as it does here?

ahahahahaha. this sounds like my mum, trying to be be helpful but actually just being really awful. 'try to help you', read 'make you feel really bad about yourself'.

That's why I found the card so awkward/funny, lol. It's always interesting to find personal cards stuck into books.

Yay HP! Line-ness was fun with you guys!

Have you read Middlesex, by Jeffrey Eugenides? It's amazing.

Also, what's your updated status/decision on Azkatraz?

[identity profile] emilie-rainbow.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I have not read Middlesex, but that was on my to read list a long time ago, thanks for the reminder! Sadly, I can't make it to Azkatraz. Hope you have fun if you can go though!

[identity profile] mary-helen.livejournal.com 2009-07-18 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Totes agree w everything you said abt HBP. I LOVED that Malfoy was like an emo cokehead for the whole movie! It made him much more endearing than I could've thought possible for him.
Middlesex is very good. If you want something more YA and less academic I have THREE recommendations:
1.) Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr--a girl can see faeries who are mischievous and scary and walk among us. Love interest, conflict, etc, ensues...
2.) City of Bones by Cassandra Clare--a girl meets demon hunters a la Buffy. Hottest love interest EVER. Deeply troubled & way more badass than Edward Cullen. The end is a bit off, imho, but it's part of trilogy.
3.) Marked by P.C. Cast--the trashiest of the three. About a Vampire HS. Complete romance novel/trashy action novel, etc. but SO good. There's like 6 books so far and I don't know how many there'll be total.
